There are different data storage options, although modern and current systems prefer cloud storage because of the advantages it provides.

We can distinguish three different types of storage: Cloud storage, On-premises server storage or a Hybrid solution.

Advantages:

Scalability: The laboratory grows according to its needs.

Cost-efficient: Possibility of having a LIMS with a low initial investment and based on a pay-as-you-go model. No investment in additional hardware or software.

Accessibility: Ability to access from anywhere at any time by simply having a device and an Internet connection.

Maintenance: Minimal maintenance and fast version upgrades. Data backup by the LIMS provider.

Disadvantages:

Internet is a must: Require Internet connection, although nowadays the Internet is available on almost any device.

Recurrent costs: Pay-as-you-go means that periodic payments are made, but this can become an advantage as the laboratory can benefit of having a good LIMS for a small initial investment.


Local Server Storage

Advantages:

Total Control: The laboratory has full access to data and full control of the hardware.

Login times: A priori the access is faster, although it also depends on the maintenance of the existing network in the laboratory.

Disadvantages:

Scalability: Limited because scalability implies investments in infrastructure.

Big upfront cost: Possibility of having a LIMS with a low initial investment and based on a pay-as-you-go model is not an option. Big initial investment in hardware and software is required.

Accessibility: Limited within the laboratory environment. Access from remote locations will require investment in infrastructure and software.

Maintenance: The laboratory itself is in charge of maintenance, updates and backups.


Hybrid Storage

Advantages:

Flexibility: Combination of local storage and cloud-based.

Infrastructure complexity: Managing a hybrid solution can be more complex and may require additional infrastructure.

Greater scalability than local storage, but less than the cloud storage.

Disadvantages:

Big investment: Costs are increased due to investments in local servers and cloud service.
